The festival, which was a joint effort between the Tourism Ministry and National Visual Arts Gallery, came to a close after seven months since its launch in June.
National Visual Arts Development Board chairman Datuk Mahadzir Lokman said 1MCAT’s main objective was to attract international tourists to invest in Malaysian contemporary art.
“This is also to showcase Malaysia’s identity through art and as a catalyst towards unity and harmony of the multicultural society.
“This year’s 1MCAT has organised 117 programmes as compared to only six in 2010. This year, we had the participation from 876 local artists ,” he said after closing the festival here today (Saturday).
Mahadzir said Malaysian art was not only well-known in the region but slowly growing recognition in parts of Europe as well as Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico and the United States.
“Some of our artists’ works have just returned from famous art galleries such as the Saatchi gallery and La Galleria Pall Mall, both in London, and we will be introducing much more Malaysian art abroad.”
The closing ceremony also saw the “Portraits of The World” programme where 62 Miss Tourism International 2014 delegates had their portraits sketched.
This was in conjunction with the 18th Miss Tourism World final 2014.
“We invited them here to work hand in hand with our hardworking artists to share with us their beauty through art,” Mahadzir said.
Miss Tourism International president Tan Sri Danny Ooi presented prizes to three artists whose artworks were selected to win the Portraits of The World competition.
Amirul Mukminin who drew a portrait of Miss Bolivia walked away with RM3,000 after winning first prize, followed by Ronnie Mohd who sketched the contestant from China and won RM2,000.
Third place went to Mohd Adzran Omar who drew Miss Kyrgyzstan.
